Article Processing Charge (APC)

Frontiers in Environmental Biology operates under a Gold Open Access publishing model, ensuring that all published articles are freely accessible worldwide without subscription or access restrictions. This model supports rapid knowledge dissemination and enables unrestricted sharing and reuse of scientific findings.

To sustain high-quality editorial operations and open-access dissemination, the journal applies an Article Processing Charge (APC) for accepted manuscripts. APC fees support costs associated with manuscript handling, peer review management, editorial processing, copyediting, typesetting, online hosting, long-term archiving, and journal administration.

Importantly, APC fees are only applicable after a manuscript has successfully passed peer review and has been formally accepted for publication. No fees are charged at submission or during the review process.

APC Policy Timeline

To encourage early submissions and support journal development, APC fees are currently fully sponsored by the publisher.

  • No APC will be charged for articles accepted before March 31, 2028, as publication costs are fully supported by the publisher during this initial period.
  • Beginning April 1, 2028, the journal will apply an APC of USD 2,000 per accepted article (taxes excluded, where applicable).

Waivers and Discounts

The journal is committed to ensuring that publication costs do not prevent valuable scientific contributions from being disseminated. Authors from low- and middle-income countries or authors facing financial constraints may apply for APC waivers or discounts.

Requests are evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Authors seeking financial assistance should contact the Editorial Office at the time of submission and provide a brief explanation supporting their request.

Detailed waiver eligibility criteria and application procedures will be published on the journal website prior to the implementation of APC charges.

Rewards and Benefits for Early Contributors

To recognize early contributors supporting the journal during its establishment phase, the following incentives apply:

★ Authors submitting manuscripts before March 31, 2028, and whose articles are accepted, will receive a 50% APC discount applicable to a future publication after APC implementation.

★ Articles recognized with an Annual Highly Cited Paper Award among submissions made before March 31, 2028, will receive a full APC waiver for one future publication after APC fees become active.

These benefits aim to reward authors contributing high-impact research during the journal’s formative years.
